Emily Weiss is a beauty blogger and mogul, she started a beauty blog “Into the Gloss” and founded Glossier. She was included in Forbes’ 30 Under 30 in 2017 and Fortune’s 40 Under 40 in 2018.

Early life and education

Emily Weiss was born in the March 22, 1985 in Wilton, Connecticut. She has been interested in beauty and fashion since she was young. She has a younger brother and her mother is a house wife while his father worked at a global technology company, Pitney Bowes.

During high school, she had a quick modeling career and even interned at Ralph Lauren. She also worked as a babysitter for a neighbor who worked for Ralph Lauren. Then she interned at Teen Vogue while she was taking up Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art at the New York University. During this time, she also appeared in a few episodes on the Hills. She graduated college in 2007 and worked at a fashion assistant at W Magazine and styling assistant for Elissa Santisi in Vogue.

She launched her online blog “Into the Gloss” in 2010. A website about women’s routines for beauty and selfcare. Her time in the morning from 4am until 8am is dedicated to writing for Into the Gloss. She decided to quit her job and focus on her business venture after her online blog’s success by reaching 10 million-page views in a month.

Glossier

Emily Weiss started the idea of venturing into business in 2013. She tried and reached out to 12 venture capitalists and was declined 11 times before finally getting an approval by Forerunner Ventures’ founder, Kristen Green who helped Weiss in raising $2 million in seed funding. Helen Steed, a creative director was one of the first members of the team assembled with the investment they gathered.

Glossier was officially launched as an e-commerce platform in October of 2014, with the brand’s first four products. Just a weeks after its launch, Glossier announced an additional $8.4 million in VC funding, raising its investments to $24 million. At this time, the total venture funding was raised to $86 million.

The company’s first ever showroom was officially opened in 2017 in Lafayette St., New York. Another one was opened in California in 2018. By 2018, an additional of $52 million from IVP and Index Ventures, Forerunner Ventures, Thrive Capital, and 14W.

Personal Life

Emily Weiss got engaged in May of 2015 and got married a year after two long-time boyfriend, Diego. It was reported that the two separated and Weiss is currently seeing Will Gaybrick, partner of Thrive Capital.
